Concert Tomorrow

Hello!

Hello everyone! I apologize I have been so behind on posting! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are on the fast track through December. There was a lot of important information that went home Friday- Please check it out! Also our final book order before Christmas was due today, but I am postponing our due date until tomorrow evening! Fall Festival

Thank you soooooo much to all of the family's that came and/or contributed to our Fall Festival!!! The day was a bit chaotic but the students had a great time and I would say it was a success! I have a few pictures from the day below! Enjoy!!!

Update

Hello everyone! I hope you have all had a wonderful weekend and remembered to set your clocks back this morning! I just wanted to send out a few reminders:

* There is a lot of information in the Friday folder this week, including a field-trip permission slip!
* Please send a coat, hat and mittens with your children for recess
* If your child is wearing boots to school, please send extra shoes
* Tuesday November 8th - voting will take place at the school. Lunch will take place in the classroom and will be bag lunches for students that get lunch from school.
* There is no school on Thursday November 10th and Friday November 11th!

Book Order Update

Friday I will be sending home a new book order. This book order will be due by November 11th so the books will be in by Thanksgiving. I will send one more book order out early in December. Many parents order books for their students for Christmas so I wanted to give everyone a heads up that there will be one more in December, however the new one this week has great holiday offers! Thank you for supporting reading (and our classroom)!

Volunteering In Our Classroom

I have had inquiries about volunteering in the classroom (Yayy!)! I am trying to brainstorm how best to make this work. If you are interested, please comment on this post and I am more than willing to take any ideas/suggestions. I am looking for how many people are interested, how often and what you are interested in. When I gather some information, I will send out a schedule to sign up.

Cold Weather Notice

Please be sure to send students in appropriate clothing for the weather. We are outside at 11:30 in the morning. Temperatures have been below 40*. Hats and mittens as well as thick sweatshirts or jackets are needed! Also, if you send your child in boots, please be sure to send in an extra pair of shoes to change into. If you would like to leave the extra shoes at school, please let me know! Thank you in advance!

Writing Workshop and Read to Self

Update

I apologize I haven't posted in a while! I have been trying to get photos to post and I am not having any luck! I am hoping I can get them through tonight as I am on my third attempt! I will update you via writing and hopefully post pictures later!

Literacy

Students have been reading for 15 minutes everyday! We have been working hard at building stamina with our word work. On Friday students reached 12 minutes!!! They are doing awesome! Tomorrow I will be introducing our word work bins. Each bin has an activity in it around letters, sounds, words, rhyming, beginning sounds and/or other skills we are learning. Students will choose one bin per person and work on the given activity during our word work time. We have been practicing rhyming- listening to stories, playing games and matching rhyming pairs. We will continue working with rhyming this week! 

We also learned about our cafe menu. Our cafe menu is similar to a menu at a restaurant, but rather than food choices, students have a menu of reading strategies that we practice all year. In the Friday folder, you may have noticed a letter about Listening for Understanding. This is one of many strategies that goes on our cafe menu. 

In writing, students have been working in the writing workshop to produce pieces of writing. Students are at different places  but we practice making our picture match our words, adding details, and using sight words/stretching words out to produce writing. A few students a day also get the opportunity to share their writing at the end of each workshop. 

So far, we have learned the letters m, a and d. We have practiced hearing these sounds in the beginning and end of words. This week we will be working with the letters s and t. Students have also been practicing handwriting with these letters using D'Nealian font. 

Math

Students have been working with numbers 0-5. We have been counting sets, matching sets, sorting objects, counting to 100, counting forwards and backwards. Students also worked with partners to find hidden partners of 5 (eg. 2 and 3 or 4 and 1). We have also been working on fluently representing numbers with their fingers and identifying numerals 0-5. Students also practiced and demonstrated ways to track counting. 

Science/Social Studies

We began our social skills program called Second Step. The unit we are working in now helps students with being a good listener and focusing their attention. We also continue to build our classroom community and work through difficult social situations around friendship, sharing and kind words. In science, we continue to learn about pumpkins, which we will wrap up this week with our fall festival!

Dear Families,

Thank you so much to everyone who was able to attend and visit our classroom! It was so much fun for me to see your students showing you around and telling you about their day here in kindergarten! We have been very busy this week! I will bullet out some highlights below:

* We wrapped up our learning about apples
* Began working in our writing folders
* Increased our stamina in Read to Self to 13 minutes
* Created our own story using a character from a story book
* Worked with our names
* Practiced a letter sequencing game
* Listened to several stories
* Played :)
* Had two guest teachers while Miss Bailey was away
* Practiced counting
* Matched objects that were the same based on how the items were used and their patterns
* Began learning about the letter M

Next week we will begin working on:

* A new component of our Daily 5 --> Work on Writing
* Further our work with launching our writing workshop
* Continue building stamina in Read to Self
* Introduce and begin learning strategies on our cafe menu
* Begin our social skills curriculum - Second Step

Choice Time Fun!

Apple Experiment

We cut pieces of apple up to watch as they oxidized and changed in different liquids. We practiced making observations and recording our observations with Ms. Beadle/Mrs. Robinson's class!
